Cabin Life – February 19, 2011

Big rain storm yesterday. We had 3.6″ in one day. Since all the tractor work and digging in the road, the rain made the road very slippery. Both Dennis and Bob got stuck in the mud, but luckily the tractor made it easy to get out. Friday night, the night of the storm, we both parked down at Second Chance and walked up the hill in the dark and rain. It was really roughing it, but fun at the same time. Sunday we may get snow.

Here’s a video of the creek after the rain:

And a short video of a neat spring that comes after a lot of rain on the trail we walk with Ginger:

Ed, Linda, Bob, and Winnie came up Saturday afternnon for a visit. Bob was not able to get his car up the hill, we had to go and pick them up with the truck. We grilled some steaks and had a few cocktails. We had coffee by Brenda’s firepit this morning after our hike. Its another weekend of of 70 degree weather, I don’t know how we make it through!!!

Cabin Life – February 6, 2011

This week there has been a lot of activity down below with bulldozing and redoing the ATV trails for Geigert Ranch (Second Chance). John was up on Friday morning and said they wanted to do a little more work on the main road to our house above the water tanks, but when we checked it out they had done work between the tanks breaking a lot of water pipes. Now Second Chance doesn’t have water until they get it fixed. Glad we have our own well. Now more equipment has arrived and we saw on our Sunday walk that they are redoing the culvert under the road for the creek by Second Chance. It also looks like they are trying to make a pond below where the road crosses.

Bob and Ginger got to walk Warner Springs hike after many weeks not being able to do it. The creek is flowing all the way to the highway like last year, even though we’ve only had one rain in January and still no rain in February. The cows were grazing and Ginger was well behaved around them, on and off the leash. They have also started framing the Fire Station at Warner Springs.

On Sunday we saw a loose bull on the regular trail we walked. The do have cattle by Mataguay and it must have got loose. We don’t have our cattle guards up yet. We also found a pretty water fall just off the trail we have never seen before. Bob heard it while looking for a stick for Ginger.

Dennis heard that they are still trying to close the deal for Pala to buy the Ranch, but with over 2,500 separate Titles to get straight there is a ways to go. There is also a lawsuit about whether the vote to sell was conducted correctly. That will be mediated, or tried next month and the deal wont be able to close until that is settled.

Cabin Life – January 2, 2011

We were planning a quiet New Year’s Eve, but Ed and Linda called on Wednesday and asked if we minded company. They brought their own place to stay, Ed’s new truck and camper, and also a lot of food. We had a great visit and start to the New Year. Ed walked with us and Ginger and, for the first time since he moved, checked out the work John and Nicki have done at Second Chance. On Sunday we started getting the gutter up on the Guesthouse patio cover, and did one tank of gas in the chainsaw of brush cutting around the front of our place. It’s that time of year.

Next week Bob works “West Side Story”.

Cabin Life – December 27, 2010

Mike came up Thursday night to spend Christmas. Friday, Dennis had to work at the Post Office. Mike and Bob brought him lunch on the way to Shadow Mountain to buy some wine and have a picnic lunch. Friday night we made Mike’s special Shrimp Scampi for Christmas Eve dinner. We started to watch the 8 part “The Pillars of Earth”. We liked it so much by the end of the weekend we had watched all the parts. On Christmas, Tim and Ed came up for dinner and we had ham with roasted veg and potatoes. Sunday, after Tim and Ed left, Tom, Jodi, their kids, Olivia, Nick and Zack, plus Tom’s parents and sister who are visiting came to check out our place. After a short visit we all went to Wynola Pizza for lunch, before we took Mike home and Bob worked at the Timken.

Hike with Ginger after the “Storm of the Decade”

5″ of rain since yesterday. During a clearing this afternoon Bob took Ginger for a walk down to the road. Here are some pictures. Don’t let the news scare you. There was a lot of rain, but at least here, it was a good thing. More water for our well!

Creek starts flowing

So far a little over 5″ of rain from Pineapple Express. Today and tomorrow are supposed to bring the most rain. We’ll see if we can beat the week of Don and Brenda last year.

On our walk today we saw the creek started flowing:

Cabin Life – December 18, 2010

Last week we had notice the power was supposed to be shut off for most the day on Tuesday. The notice said it had something to do with new power poles for the transmission line. Then, Monday night we got a call that the outage would only be for a few hours. On our walk Tuesday, Bob and Ginger saw some power trucks down by the road. Turns out they were coming to our property to change the transformer. The job took about an hour, but when they tried to hook the new one up to test it, no power! The power was off because one of the new power poles down by the highway also as a support for the distribution power lines to the houses in our area. By the time Dennis got home at 4 pm., our transformer was working.

Thursday was the start of a soggy week of weather for us. They call it the Pineapple Express. So far not that much rain, but Sunday and Wednesday next week are supposed to bring more. Nothing like when Don and Brenda were here last January.
